Announcement for Spring 25 Student Teachers:

Registration for Student Teaching Interviews is open August 20th - September 3rd, 2024.

Interviews begin September 3rd.

After signing up for an interview, you will receive an email with further details. Some items must be completed 5 business days prior to your interview so keep this in mind when selecting your interview appointment. Allow yourself enough time to complete the required tasks.

Student Teaching

Admission to Student Teaching Requirements

In order to be admitted to student teaching, you must:

  • have been admitted to teacher education;

  • complete an admission to student teaching orientation (see Orientation Information tab for more information);

    • start the application for student teaching

    • complete a review of the Professional Code of Ethics for Kentucky School Personnel and submit a signed Declaration of Eligibility (during admission to student teaching orientation), affirming a commitment to upholding the code and acknowledging awareness of information required for state certification; (If answers given on the Declaration of Eligibility change during the time of participation in the teacher education program, the Director of Teacher Education Services must be notified immediately.)

  • have a 2.75 or higher GPA in your major/area(s), professional education, and overall;

  • have demonstrated teaching ability in field and clinical situations;

  • have completed your student teaching placement interview with the coordinator of student teaching;

  • document completion of 200 or more field hours (beginning 9/1/2013) on your Audit and Component Sheet and in KFETS;

  • submit a valid and current medical examination*, which includes a TB Risk Assessment*. You must use the Murray State Medical Exam Form for Student Teaching;

  • obtain a criminal records background check*;

  • have submitted all required supplemental items as discussed in orientation and during student teaching placement interview;

  • have senior, post-bacc, or graduate status and have completed all coursework (except for student teaching);

  • have supplied TES with any other required information (transcripts, undergrad course exception forms, etc.);

  • have agreed to all terms of the Student Teaching Contract; the contract; and

  • have submitted your application.

*NOTE: Do not schedule the Medical Examination, TB Risk Assessment, or the Criminal Background Check required for student teaching until you have completed your Student Teaching Placement Interview with the Coordinator of Student Teaching, as there are constraints associated with the previous mentioned requirements.

Certification Requirements

FOR KENTUCKY CERTIFICATION

Any person who wishes to be recommended by Murray State University for an initial Kentucky teaching certificate must have:

  • successfully completed an approved teacher education program including successful student teaching;

  • filed an application for certification using the EPSB/KDE Kentucky Educator Credentialing System (KECS).

  • obtained passing scores on Praxis Subject Assessments and the appropriate Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam (if applicable), as defined by the current Kentucky Test Requirements;

  • completed all applicable computer literacy and application requirements; and

  • earned a bachelor's degree.

NOTE: Requirements for teacher certification are established by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board. Students are cautioned that changes in these requirements may occur at various times throughout the year. Before registering for the test(s), please refer to the Education Professional Standards Board (KDE/OELE) for current requirements or contact the Office of Educator Licensure and Effectiveness at 502.564.4606 or 888.598.7667.

FOR CERTIFICATION IN OTHER STATES

To be recommended for certification in other states, all Kentucky requirements must be met. For more information regarding certification in specific states, refer to our Certification page.

Admission to Student Teaching Orientation

Orientations will be conducted through Canvas.

  • 1-2 days before the orientation you registered for, you will receive a Canvas notification of the course. You cannot access the materials in the course until 8 am the day of the orientation.
  • At 8 am on the morning of the orientation, you will receive an email from TES at msu.teachereducationservices@murraystate.edu  as a reminder to start the Canvas course.
  • You must complete the orientation by 11:59 pm that day.
  • You should allow for 2.5 - 3 hours to complete the orientation.
  • You will need access to a printer. If you know you will not have access to a printer, you can pick up a copy of the Declaration of Eligibility from the TES Office at 2101 Alexander Hall prior to the orientation.
  • Assistance for the orientation is only available Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 3:30 pm.

 

The following Admission to Student Teaching Orientation dates are for those students who plan to Student Teach during Fall 2025. It is mandatory that you complete one Admission to Student Teaching Orientation.

Student Teaching Application

Applications are only started while attending an admission to student teaching orientation. You should not start an application on your own. Doing so will result in an invalid application which will be deleted.

If you are on an application that requires a fee, it is the wrong application. Our applications do not require payment. Please contact Susan at skrieb@murraystate.edu for further assistance.
