MURRAY, Ky. — Murray State University has been awarded a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue its TRIO Talent Search program, which helps students in western Kentucky prepare for and pursue postsecondary education.
The new grant provides $380,000 annually for five years and will allow Murray State’s Talent Search program to serve 760 students each year in partner school districts throughout the region.
Talent Search is one of the U.S. Department of Education’s federal TRIO programs, which are designed to increase access to and completion of postsecondary education for students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Talent Search primarily serves students who are potential first-generation college students and/or meet federal income eligibility guidelines.
“This award represents a significant investment in students and communities across western Kentucky,” said Director of Murray State University’s Talent Search program Audrey Neal. “Talent Search is about making sure students have the information, support and opportunities they need to see college as an attainable goal and to develop a clear plan for getting there. We are excited to continue building strong partnerships with our schools, students and families over the next five years.”
Murray State Talent Search will partner with Carlisle County Schools, Christian County Schools, Fulton County Schools, Fulton Independent Schools, Mayfield Independent Schools, Paducah Public Schools and Trigg County Schools during the new grant cycle.
Through these partnerships, Talent Search participants receive academic advising, college and career exploration, financial aid and financial literacy information, assistance with college admissions and financial aid applications, college visits, academic enrichment opportunities and other services designed to support college readiness and enrollment. The program works closely with school personnel, students and families to provide services responsive to the needs of each community while helping students successfully navigate the path from middle and high school to postsecondary education.
