MURRAY, Ky. Murray State University’s Wrather West Kentucky Museum will host the “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” exhibit beginning March 27 through May 1. The traveling exhibit comes to the University through the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street and is offered to the campus and broader community in cooperation with the Kentucky Humanities Council. Individuals can sign up for a free tour at libguides.murraystate.edu/wrathermuseum.

The exhibition examines the nearly 250-year-old American experiment of a government “of, by and for the people,” and how each generation since continues to question how to form “a more perfect union”. According to the Wrather museum, “the exhibition also explores the action, reaction, vision and revision that democracy demands as Americans continue to question how to shape the country. From the revolution and suffrage, to civil rights and casting ballots, everyone in every community is part of this ever-evolving story ― the story of democracy in America.”

The Wrather museum will showcase a few of west Kentucky’s most tireless voting rights champions as part of the exhibit as well.

“Voices and Votes” is based on an exhibition currently on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History called “American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith.”

Weather West Kentucky Museum is located at 16th Street and University Drive on the Murray State campus in Murray, Kentucky. The museum is open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, contact Jeff McLaughlin at smclaughlin1@murraystate.edu.
