MURRAY, Ky. — Murray State University’s College of Education and Human Services has named Megan Smetana as the recipient of the 2026 Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award, recognizing her outstanding commitment to student success, instructional excellence and dedication to the field of communication sciences and disorders.

Smetana, who works closely with students preparing for careers as speech-language pathologists and audiologists, was selected for her exceptional teaching practices, mentorship and meaningful impact on student learning and professional development.

“I am truly honored and grateful to receive the College of Education and Human Services Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award,” said Smetana. “Teaching is something I care deeply about, and it means a great deal to be recognized in this way.”

She emphasized that the award reflects the collaborative and supportive environment within the college.

“What makes this recognition especially meaningful is the opportunity I have every day to work with such supportive colleagues and dedicated students,” Smetana said. “My colleagues continually inspire me with their passion, generosity and commitment to our program, and I learn from them all the time.”

Smetana also highlighted the central role students play in her work.

“Our students are the reason we do this work, and it is a privilege to be part of their learning, growth and future as speech-language pathologists and audiologists,” she said.

Dr. Samir Patel, assistant dean of the College of Education and Human Services, highlighted that Smetana consistently goes above and beyond in her role, bringing energy and creativity to her teaching while remaining deeply committed to student success. He pointed to her ability to create engaging learning environments and her ability to expand opportunities—such as leading international study experiences—as key reasons she stands out as a deserving recipient of the award.

“Smetana’s commitment to her craft is evident in every aspect of her work, from her extensive professional development to the innovative ways she engages students in the classroom,” Patel said. “Her leadership of the study abroad program in Ireland creates impactful, real-world learning opportunities that extend far beyond campus. She represents the very best of what teaching and mentorship should be.”

The Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award is one of the college’s highest honors, celebrating faculty who demonstrate exemplary teaching, innovation in the classroom and a strong commitment to student engagement and achievement. Smetana’s recognition reflects her passion for teaching and her lasting influence on the next generation of healthcare and education professionals.

Smetana, along with other recipients, will receive a bound certificate signed by the Board Chair and University President along with a $1,000 monetary award. In addition, a plaque of award recipients will be hung in Heritage Hall.

Recipients will be honored at the Faculty Recognition Banquet, which will be held on Thursday, April 16 from 5:30-7:30 p.m in the Curris Center Ballroom.
