Murray State University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosted Math Day 2025 for 12 area high schools on Feb. 5.

 

MURRAY, Ky. – Murray State University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosted Math Day 2025 for 12 area high schools on Feb. 5. A total of 210 registered students and 22 teachers participated.

High school students and teachers engaged in a full day of math competitions and math-related activities in Lovett Auditorium and Faculty Hall. 

The day began with an individual math competition in the morning followed by an alumnus talk by Jessica Lugo, who graduated from Murray State with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 2017 and a master’s degree in mathematics in 2019.  She currently works with Quotient Technologies, Inc.

The talk was part of the Seventh Annual Jesse D. Jones Lecture Series, and students had the opportunity to ask questions about pursuing a career in mathematics. After lunch, students participated in a team competition where, in teams of three or four, students worked through hands-on activities. Awards were presented to the top performing teams in the team competition, the top performing students in each exam level (lower and upper) and to the top performing school. 

Team Competition winners: 

-First place: Marshall County High School: Hudson Doughty, Austin Lyles, Lauren Noles and Maverick Simmons

-Second place: Paducah Tilghman High School: Evan Coltharp, Madelyn Duwe, Giorgia Morabito and Jude Williams

-Third place: Calloway County High School: Connor Pile, Mason Riley, Gary Rogers and Sean Williams

Lower and Upper Exam Winners:  

-First place: Ava Bogard (Calloway County High School); Gary Rogers (Calloway County High School)

-Second place: Sean Williams (Calloway County High School); Anastasia Arkova (Murray High School)

-Third place: Divine Ezinma (Calloway County High School); Jack Williams (Calloway County High School)

-Fourth place: Mason Riley (Calloway County High School); Connor Pile (Calloway County High School)

-Fifth place: Sumin Park (Murray High School); Maverick Simmons (Marshall County High School)

Recognition for Scholarships—Top juniors taking the Upper Level Exam: 

-Highest Score: Anastasia Arkova (Murray High School)

-Second Highest Score: Connor Pile (Calloway County High School)

-Third Highest Score: Maverick Williams (Marshall County High School)

Recognition for Scholarships—Top seniors taking the Upper Level Exam: 

-Highest Score: Gary Rogers (Calloway County High School)

-Second Highest Score: Jack Williams (Calloway County High School)

-Third Highest Score: Prem Patel (Calloway County High School)

Top Performing School: Calloway County High School

Participating schools: Academy for Individual Excellence, Calloway County High School, Carlisle County High School, Fulton County High School, Graves County High School, Hickman County High School, Joppa High School, Marshall High School, Mayfield High School, Murray High School, Northside Baptist Christian School and Paducah Tilghman High School.
