Jazz Ensembles will present annual “Swing into Spring” April 8

MURRAY, Ky. – The Murray State University Jazz Ensembles will present concerts on Tuesday, April 8 at Lovett Auditorium on the Murray campus.  The concerts are free to the public. The Blue and Gold Jazz Combos will perform modern jazz classics at 6 p.m. in an on-stage style setting, and at 7:30 p.m. the Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra will present classic big band sounds in a traditional concert configuration. The award-winning groups are directed by Dr. Todd E. Hill, professor of music and director of jazz studies. 

The Blue and Gold Jazz Combos will be presenting music by John Coltrane, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Sonny Rollins and Jaco Pastorius. The Jazz Band will be performing John Lewis’ “Afternoon in Paris,” Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin,” Jamey Aebersold’s “Trane’s Ride,” a latin classic “The Lady in Red,” Doc Severinsen and Tommy Newsom’s “The Way I Feel About You,” and Duke Ellington’s “What Am I Here For?” 

The Jazz Orchestra will play Count Basie’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You” arranged by Quincy Jones, “I Have Dreamed” from “The King and I” featuring junior trombonist Jeremiah Morris of Murray, Kentucky, Bob Mintzer’s “Slo-Funk,” “Stardust” featuring senior trumpeter Max Welch of Evansville, Indiana, “Milestones” by Miles Davis, Michel LeGrand’s “The Summer Knows” from “The Summer of ‘42” featuring senior lead alto sax Caleb Dries of Louisville, Kentucky, Toshiko Akiyoshi’s “I Ain’t Gonna Ask No More” featuring senior bass trombonist Jared Chance-Martin of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and “Emerald Eyes,” a Latin style closer.
