Dr. Alicia Carthell receives Rudolph J. Joenk, Jr. Award

MURRAY, Ky. - Dr. Alicia Carthell, assistant professor of English at Murray State University and
Murray State alumna, was awarded the Rudolph J. Joenk, Jr. Award for Best Paper of
2024 in the journal IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication. Her article entitled
“An Analysis of Bias in Language Content in Books Used in Technical and Professional
Writing Courses: A Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Matter” was published
in March 2024. The award recognizes an outstanding article published in the preceding
year, is selected by the IEEE professional communication society editorial advisory
committee, and is traditionally presented at the ProComm annual conference to be held
this year in July. IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication is a centralized
resource for the engineering communication field.
Dr. Carthell received a Bachelor of Arts (minor in management information systems)
and a Master of Science degree in Technical and Scientific Communication, and a miniMBA
from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She received a Doctor of Education degree from
Murray State.
