Murray State University celebrates Black History Month with a variety of events and programs

The campus and greater community are invited to celebrate Black History Month both virtually and in-person
MURRAY, Ky. — Murray State University is hosting a variety of programs, resources and opportunities for the campus and greater community throughout Black History Month.
Events will begin on Feb. 10 with an African American Read-In where students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to read works from African American authors. The event will be live-streamed on the Office of Multicultural Initiatives, Student Leadership & Inclusive Excellence (OMI) Facebook and YouTube pages. Part two of the OMI financial literacy series will be held on Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. in the Dr. Marvin D. Mills, Sr. Multicultural Center located on Murray State’s campus. On the evening of Feb. 22, OMI will host a black history trivia night and dinner in Winslow Dining Hall located on campus.
Black Student Council will host several events including a black history poster contest, a welcome table outside of the Curris Center on Feb. 15 and a movie night on Feb. 18. The Women’s Center in partnership with West KY Now will be holding a voter registration table on Feb. 22 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in recognition of Black History Month and in honor of Ida B. Wells and her voter registration work.
Murray State University Libraries is sharing a variety of resources on African American history including access to many scholarly journals, e-books and more.
The month’s events will conclude with a day-long symposium on topics of segregation and recreation. The symposium, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Initiatives, Student Leadership & Inclusive Excellence, Cherokee State Resort Historical Park of Aurora, KY, Inc. and Explore Kentucky will include presenters from across the United States. The event is Feb. 25 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Curris Center Theater, and will be free and open to the public.
