Will Racer Nation Orientation be virtual or in-person?

Students will have the choice of a complete virtual orientation or a hybrid model with both virtual sessions and in-person sessions. 

What do these sessions look like?

Two weeks prior to your registered session, you will be emailed a link to get you started.  This email will be sent to the student email address associated with their orientation registration.  

This is a four-part experience:

  1. Online Orientation Modules 
  2. Advising and Course Registration 
  3. Day of Orientation Sessions 
  4. August Welcome Events 

If you chose an in-person session you will complete you modules during the two weeks prior to coming to campus.

How can my parents attend  orientation?

In the two weeks concurrent with the student’s orientation, we will be offering a separate virtual orientation for family and guests.  This will be an opportunity for them to learn more about the place you will be spending so much time in the coming years.  There will be modules catered specifically to parents.

 For in-person orientation, we will be following safety guidelines.  In addition to only one (1) guest per student, there will be other guidelines for in-person orientation.  Please refer back to Racer Nation Orientation page for more information.

What if I am an Active Duty/Veteran student or an adult student that is 23 years of age or older?

We have an orientation session specifically for you. For more information about Adult and Veteran Orientation please contact Alison Marshall at 270-809-5796 or email at amarshall@murraystate.edu.

If I am a transfer student, do I have to attend Orientation?

Transfer students are required to attend orientation; however, we encourage you to contact your academic advisor before you attend your orientation session to create your class schedule for the fall semester as soon as possible.

Am I required to participate in all four parts of the virtual experience?

Yes, you must participate in all four parts of the experience.  There will be important information given each step of the way.

What do I need to do BEFORE my Orientation date?

  • You will need to activate your @murraystate email address and your myGate account. Refer back to your admissions packet or contact the Service Desk at 270.809.2346.
  • Review your academic major listed on your myGate account; if you are want to change your major you will need to notify the Office of Admissions at admissions@murraystate.edu or 270.809.3741.
  • Complete the Consent to Release Student Information Form – within myGate
  • Complete the Pre-Registration Form – within myGate

What will I need on the day of my online Orientation

Webinars and live events will be offered on your scheduled orientation date.  You will be required to be available that day to attend online. 

  • If you plan to participate in live discussions, you will need a computer or other device with a webcam and microphone.
  • You will want to have a way to take notes; either via paper & pen or computer, etc.

Is there a cost for orientation?

Yes, the orientation fee is $130. This fee covers all costs for the student and any parent(s) or guest(s). This fee is required at the time you make your reservation. You can pay online with either a credit or debit card. If you do not have access to this, please call the Office of Recruitment for assistance at 800-272-4678 ext 2.    

The orientation fee is refundable until May 1 (minus a processing fee).   If you have a scheduling conflict you can change the date of your orientation session.  Please note that you can only change your date to one that is still available. 

Are special accommodations available for individuals with disabilities?

Yes, if you or someone attending with you has a disability which requires special accommodations for full participation in the orientation program, please call the Office of Disability Services at 270-809-5737.

Will I pay my fall tuition during Orientation?

No, your tuition and fees bill will be mailed to you around mid-July if you have already attended orientation by that time. If you attend one of the later programs, your bill will be emailed a few days after that session. Please make a payment by the date shown on the bill to avoid your class schedule being cancelled. If you have any questions regarding billing, Bursar's Office personnel will be available during orientation, or you may call them at 800-272-4678 ext. 5.

What is the Honors College?

The Murray State Honors College is designed to enrich the educational experience of highly motivated students by increasing the opportunity for interacting with outstanding faculty, both in small class settings such as Honors seminars, and in ongoing research experiences. The Honors College emphasizes enriched versions of the university studies requirements during the freshman and sophomore years. On the junior and senior levels, it supplements the specialized course work with individual study and research. Students must possess an ACT score of 28 or above, or a 3.5 GPA, or be in the top 10% of your graduating HS class and complete a separate application for admission to the Honors College. What is your refund policy?

The orientation fee is refundable until May 1 (minus a processing fee).   If you have a scheduling conflict you can change the date of your orientation session.  Please note that you can only change your date to one that is still available.  

In order to request a refund, send an email before May 1st to msu.newstudentprograms@murraystate.edu.  Include the student's name, address and Student ID (M#) or birthdate along with a brief description of why you will not be attending  orientation.  

What if I need to change my Orientation date?

To change your date, you may log in to your MyGate account, access your Racer Nation Orientation registration and change your date. Please note that you can only change your date to one that is available. If you need assistance, call the Office of Recruitment at 800-272-4678 ext 2.
