How to Apply

Apply on our online system, Horizons before the deadline listed below.

Please take a look around Horizons to familiarize yourself with what programs we are offering. If you have any questions, contact the study abroad office at msu.studyabroad@murraystate.edu or by phone at (270) 809-2277. When you have decided which program you are interested in, register on Horizons and click “Apply.” You will only need to register and apply once per program. The scholarship application is also on the Horizons system, and you will have access to it once you have completed the application for your program.

What you'll need to apply

  • Murray State Education Abroad Application
  • $100 Non-refundable Application Fee (must be paid online on Horizons application via credit or debit card)
  • Unofficial Murray State Transcript from myGate - you can download this from the Academics tab.
  • Personal Statement detailing your goals for your study abroad experience 
  • Letter of Recommendation from an Murray State faculty member, requested through the Horizons system - for exchange/semester programs only.
  • Emergency Contact Information
  • If you are applying to a program hosted by one of our providers (CCSA, KIIS, ISA, CEA, Lorenzo de Medici, IBS, etc.) or an exchange partner, you will complete a second application. See Horizons for more details.
  • TIP: you do NOT have to have a passport at the time you apply

Acceptance to the program

After you have completed the online study abroad application through Horizons, you'll be notified via email of your acceptance to the program and the next steps of the application to be completed. After acceptance, you will have several weeks to compile the list below. Items turned in after the Post-Acceptance deadline will incur a $250 non-refundable non-compliance fee.

Please remember that Murray State application approval may not indicate approval with your third-party provider (CCSA, KIIS, ISA, CEA, Lorenzo de Medici, IBS, etc.)

After you have been accepted to your program, you'll upload to Horizons:
  • Digital photo of your face for emergencies
  • Copy of your passport
  • Insurance Enrollment (You must do this for yourself online and upload a copy of your card to the Horizons system)
  • Emergency medical information
  • Flight itinerary

Eligibility Requirements

In general, there is no set GPA requirement for most study abroad programs, though some programs and providers may set their own minimum GPA. Students must be in Good Academic Standing at the time of their application to be considered.

Students with a disciplinary history from Murray State University or another institution will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Students must be 18 years old & up.

Students must have successfully completed at least one semester on campus before being fully admitted to a study abroad program. Students can apply for a study abroad program before completing a full semester, but they will be conditionally admitted to the program pending their grade report from the first semester.

Final Application, Scholarship, and Withdrawal Deadline for Summer: February 1, 2019

The Scholarship Application can be completed on MyGate  in the financial aid tab.  Click this link for more information on scholarship availability and eligibility requirements.

The Withdrawal Deadline gives participants the opportunity to withdraw the study abroad application before any money has been spent by Murray State to reserve airline tickets, accommodations, and other necessary logistics. If a participant knows they will not be able to participate in the program for any reason (financial, academic, personal, etc.) they should withdraw by the withdrawal deadline in order to avoid incurring any charges to their Murray State account. Please see the Study Abroad Policies & Procedures for the complete withdrawal policy.

Post-Acceptance Deadline
March 1, 2019

The Post-Acceptance Deadline is the date by which the final step of the Horizons application must be completed, including uploading a photo, emergency medical information, additional post-acceptance and insurance card. Flight information and passport upload, if unavailable, are the only items that can remain incomplete by this date.


Please follow the regular MSU course registration drop/add dates.

 

Non-Compliance Fee

 

A non-refundable $250 non-compliance fee will be charged to student accounts for any outstanding Horizon's post-acceptance items the Monday after orientation, not including flight and passport information.

A non-refundable $250 non-compliance fee will be charged for outstanding passport and flight information 30 days prior to program departure.

 

Orientation
Friday, April 5, 2019, 4:30 pm, Location TBD

There is a mandatory pre-departure orientation for all study abroad programs. The date of your mandatory orientation corresponds to the term you are studying abroad. Parents and loved ones are encouraged to attend orientation with their student participants.

A part of orientation will be online through the Canvas system. You will receive more details about the online orientation in the email that states you have been approved for your program. Canvas orientation deadline: March 30, 2019 for Summer, Fall, and Full Year Programs

Times and locations are tentative and subject to change.

Fall Semester or Full Year 2019

Priority Deadline: December 1, 2019

Summer is the most popular time to study abroad. Apply by this early deadline to have your application reviewed and your spot reserved on one of Murray State's faculty led programs for summer.

Priority Deadline: December 1, 2019

Apply by this early deadline to have your application reviewed and your spot reserved on one of Murray State's fall semester programs. Applying early helps you plan your academics for the following year.
