Accelerated 4+1 Programs

The 4+1 programs BS+MA or BS+MS allow strong students to obtain an undergraduate and a master's degree in five years.

Description
The Bachelor of Science + Master of Arts or Bachelor of Science + Master of Science Accelerated Mathematics Programs allow qualified students to complete requirements for the Bachelor of Science Area in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics Track and the Master of Arts or Master of Science in Mathematics programs within five years (or 138 credit hours for MA, 141 credit hours for MS). The objectives for both degrees are those described in the Academic Bulletin, or here:

Mathematics / Applied Mathematics Track
Master of Arts in Mathematics   Master of Science in Mathematics

Upon completion of 60 hours of coursework toward the BS in Mathematics, qualified undergraduate students may apply for admission to this program by filling out a Statement of Intent to Enter an Accelerated Graduate Program and Graduate Credit Approval form. (See admission requirements described below.) Students should complete all University Studies requirements during their first two years and should declare the BS Area in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics Track as their intended undergraduate degree no later than the end of their fifth semester. Students may enroll in graduate courses in Mathematics when they are within either two semesters or 30 hours of fulfilling undergraduate requirements, and up to 12 hours in graduate coursework in Mathematics or Statistics, approved by the Director of Graduate Studies, may count as up to 12 of the required 18 hours related to the application of mathematics detailed in the required limited electives of the Area in Mathematics: Applied Mathematics Track. The Bachelor’s degree will be awarded when undergraduate requirements have been met. Upon being officially accepted into the graduate program, and completing all requirements for the MA or MS in Mathematics, the student will receive an MA or MS in Mathematics degree. Admission to and enrollment in this program does not supersede University policies regarding tuition or financial aid.

Admission requirements for the Accelerated BS + MA or BS + MS Programs in Mathematics
Qualified students will have

  • a 3.00 cumulative GPA
  • a minimum 3.25 GPA in MAT and STA courses that are included as major courses
  • completed MAT 250, 308, 309; and will have completed or would be currently enrolled in MAT 312 and MAT 335

Total Curriculum Requirements: 138 hrs (MA) or 141 hrs (MS)
