Past Math Days

Held on February 7, 2024, 9:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., at Lovett Auditorium and Faculty Hall (3rd floor).

Math Day 2024 included a math competition intended for students at any level of high school math knowledge and various math-related activities. More than a dozen high schools from the West Kentucky area brought students to participate in the event.

The math-related activities included:

  • The 6th annual event for the Jesse D. Jones Lecture Series: an alumnus talk by Demi St. John. After the talk, high school students will be able to ask questions about pursuing a career in mathematics.
  • Team competition, where students in teams of 3 – 4 try to work through as many hands-on activities as possible in the time allotted.

  • The 2nd annual event for the Jesse D. Jones Lecture Series: a panel entitled "What Can I Actually Do with a Math Degree?". During the panel high schools students asked a current Murray State undergraduate, a faculty member, and alumni questions about pursuing a career in mathematics.
  • A group competition where students in groups of 4 – 5 worked through as many hands-on activities as possible in the time allotted.

Math Day 2017 included a math competition intended for students at any level of high school math knowledge and various math related activities. Two different exams were given, broken down by current class year. More than a dozen high schools from West Kentucky brought students to participate in the event.

The math-related activities included:

  • The inaugural event for the Jesse D. Jones Lecture Series: a student/alumni panel entitled "Got Problems? Mathematicians Can Solve Them!". During the panel high schools students were able to ask current Murray State undergraduates, graduate students and alumni questions about pursuing a career in mathematics.
  • Screening of the Oscar-nominated movie Hidden Figures.
