Biography

Dr. Martin R. Armstrong joined the faculty at Murray State University in the fall of 2024. A political theorist, he teaches courses in political theory and American politics. His teaching interests also include the History of Political Thought, Contemporary Political Theory, and Theories of Justice.

Motivated by his experience in the U.S. Navy,  his research focuses on how we theorize the relationship between the military, society, and global community. Specifically, he is interested in how political and cultural norms are produced by and embodied through the everyday and exceptional experiences of military life. He also draws on critical political economy to understand how differing conceptions of civil-military relations and the nature of military work inform broader social and political questions about democracy, global (in)justice, and resistance to militarism.

Dr. Armstrong received his PhD and MA in Political Science from The Ohio State University, with an emphasis in Political Theory and Political Psychology. His dissertation is focused on the politics of military service and martial labor in the United States. He also holds a MA in Social Science from the University of Chicago and a MA in Philosophy with a graduate certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Miami University.
