Dr. Zhang's Land Use Planning Class's Bike-Hike Trail Funded by City of Murray

June 3, 2013

The Department of Geosciences has been working with the City of Murray to research, analyze, and identify routes for mixed-mode transportation. In recent years, GSC students have identified bus routes, bike paths, and sidewalk locations. These proposals have resulted in real construction, with new bike lanes, new bus routes, and new sidewalks for the residents of the City of Murray.

Spring GSC507/607 Land Use Planning students proposed a bike-hike trail running along the banks of Bee Creek, which flows west-to-east through the north part of the city. Students worked out the trail routes using field investigation, ancillary data, and analysis tools in ArcGIS 10. Along with sidewalks, the trail would provide a non-motorized route between residential and commercial areas and the Murray State Campus.

On May 23, 2013, the Murray City Council passed a budget approving $100,000 for the development of the scenic bike-hike trail.
