Dr. Wesler at Backusburg, KY (2015)It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Kit Wesler, Director of MARC, Department of Geosciences Graduate Student Coordinator, and Director of Wickliffe Mounds for many years. Dr. Wesler was a great advocate for the use of technology, especially in the field of archaeology. He was enthusiastic about the employment of drone technology for site mapping, the use of LiDAR for site detection and evaluation, and a strong advocate for giving students hands-on field experience. Dr. Wesler took many students to field schools in Jamaica, and throughout western Kentucky, providing them valuable opportunities to enhance their knowledge. MARC was fortunate to have such an estimable colleague, mentor, and friend. Dr. Wesler will be missed.

Welcome to the Mid-America Remote sensing Center!

MARC is the heart of geospatial education for Murray State University and surrounding community. We invite all to engage with MARC to further your education in one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the North America and Europe: geospatial technologies.

For the 2015-2016 academic year, MARC continues to support the use of ESRI ArcGIS products on campus. MSU/MARC partners with the Council on Post-secondary Education and ESRI to help bring the industry-leading geospatial software products to Murray State.

Get ESRI and ArcGIS

Current support level of ArcGIS for Desktop: ArcGIS for Desktop 10.3 and ArcGIS Pro 1.0.3. We do support earlier versions, from 10.0 through 10.2.2.

Student Edition licenses of ArcGIS for Desktop are available from MARC for free. Send an email to msu.mapping@murraystate.edu to request a license. The Student Edition is a fully-functional version, the same version used in computer labs around campus. The Student Edition comes with the core GIS product, plus Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, and Geostatistical Analyst. The license does time-out after 1-year, but a renewal license can be requested.

Get Trained

The statewide license agreement between CPE and ESRI provides a number of ESRI-U online courses for free. The ESRI course offering changes frequently, so posting a course is list here will eventually be out-of-date. For a current list of courses, I refer interested people to ESRI Training.

We also support Intergraph-ERDAS Imagine

MARC also supports Intergraph-ERDAS Imagine Professional image processing software. MSU/MARC does not have a campus-wide license for Imagine, so users must be enrolled in one of the Department of Geosciences remote sensing courses to gain access to the software. For students, we do have a limited number of student licenses. Requests for the licenses must be initiated by the course professor or mentor.

Need A Map?

MARC also works with all Murray State University campus administrative offices and academic areas. We provide custom mapping and associated cartographic and graphic services. Our products can be customized for a wide variety of projects and publications. We have produced content for the Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Regional Academic Outreach, Adventures in Math and Science (AIMS), Facilities Management, and Public Safety and Emergency Management. If your project requires a mapping component or could use a eye-catching map graphic, contact us and we will consult with you on your project.

For inquires about GIS and remote sensing software, associated data, or custom mapping projects, feel free to contact MARC's GIS Manager/Programmer.
