You would be considered incarcerated if you are serving a criminal sentence in a federal, state, or local penitentiary, prison, jail, reformatory, work farm, or similar correctional institution (but in a half-way house or home detention or is sentenced to serve only weekends).
Incarcerated students:
- are not eligible for federal loans
- are eligible for SEOGs and Federal Work Study
- are eligible for Pell grants if not incarcerated in a federal or state penal institution
- are not eligible for Pell grants if he is subject to an involuntary civil commitment following incarceration for a sexual offense (as determined under the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program)
A parent is not eligible for a PLUS loan if the federal government holds a judgment lien on her property or if she is incarcerated .
