The Department of Biological Sciences offers the Master of Science in Biology degree with thesis and non-thesis options. The program prepares students to assume an active career in teaching and/or research or to pursue further graduate studies. A faculty mentor will direct each student admitted to the program. Research strengths of the department include aquatic biology, wildlife biology, mammalogy, physiological ecology, paleontology and evolution, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, microbial ecology, parasitology, animal behavior and botany. Most faculty have research labs and are supported by grants. Graduate education is necessary for many fields of biology. Although some state, federal and private sector jobs are available for baccalaureate students, many employers prefer individuals with advanced training. Sometimes the M.S. is necessary in order to qualify for higher income or a more challenging position. Students with the M.S. may find employment with various industrial or state and federal agencies (e.g., fish and wildlife units, National Institute of Health (NIH) labs, pharmaceutical companies).

Option: Watershed Science

The Arthur J. Bauernfeind Graduate Program in Business at Murray State University has a long and rigorous tradition of excellence in management education, and a recognized capacity for meeting the educational needs and challenges of MBA students in the 21st Century.

Our specific comparative advantages and points of pride are the following:

  1. AACSB Accreditation: The world has over 16,000 business programs. Yet less than 5% of these are accredited by AACSB-International: The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Murray State University is one of the 5% group of premier schools that are accredited by AACSB-International.

Find out why AACSB accreditation matters.

  2. Quality at relatively Low Cost: While the quality of Murray State University’s MBA Program is well documented, many people may not know that we have one of the most efficient cost-to-quality MBA ratios in the country. Our on-campus tuition is competitively reasonable, as evident from the tuition link given on this MBA website. Tuition for our 100% online MBA is one of the lowest in the nation. Everyone (whether Kentucky resident or not) pays the same tuition on our 100% online, AACSB-Accredited MBA.

  3. Your Careers: Our MBA students do find Jobs. We recognize that for our students, the MBA degree is not an end in itself, but rather a means towards employment and promotion at the local, regional, national, or international levels. While we are honest enough to admit that not 100% of our MBA graduates get jobs within 3 months of graduation (the global economy is simply such as it is), many of our graduates do get gainfully employed, eventually, in a multitude of fields and specializations, at home and abroad. Earning an MBA does pay off exponentially for your career, as recent research reported by the Financial Times and by CNBC.

  4. Non-Business Majors: For those whose undergraduate degree is NOT in Business—but rather in such non-business areas as agriculture, education, engineering, chemistry, biology, occupational safety and health, geography, physics, and mathematics, to name a few—please do not worry. We offer the foundation courses 100% online, except for Calculus. See the MBA curriculum link on this website for more details.

  5. Quality MBA Faculty: The same faculty teach on our regular and 100% online MBA Programs. All have PhDs from such prestigious and diverse traditional (not online) Universities as University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Edinburgh in Scotland, United Kingdom. They conduct basic/discovery scholarship, applied or integration/application scholarship, and teaching/learning scholarship in top-tier peer reviewed journals in the USA and foreign countries, in keeping with our global footprints framework and emphasis.

  6. Access and Flexibility: MBA Classes are offered to fit your schedule. Classes are taught at night, during the day, as well as 100% online. Yes, you can complete our MBA 100% online even if, for instance, you are on active military duty, stationed in Germany or South Korea.

Options:

  • Accounting
  • Business Analytics*
  • Cyber Security*
  • Economic Development*
  • Finance*
  • Global Communications*
  • Healthcare Administration*
  • Marketing*

* Available 100% online

The Department of Chemistry offers the Master of Science in Chemistry degree with thesis and non-thesis options. The non-thesis option is intended for candidates with at least two years experience in industrial or governmental laboratories. Both options require a minimum of 30 total credit hours. To enhance confidence and poise, each student is encouraged to participate in the departmental teaching program and is required to present seminars in specialty areas. For students who choose the thesis option, these will consist of one literature and one research seminar. Non-thesis students will be required to present two seminars, one of which is ordinarily a presentation describing the industrial or governmental laboratory experience that is to be substituted for the thesis requirement. The Master of Science graduate program in chemistry is designed to prepare the student for further academic work or for immediate employment in the chemical industry. We have been quite successful in placing our graduates in both of these areas. Our students gain "hands-on" experience with research tools including GC/MS, AA, NMR and FT-NMR, IR, UV/VIS, HPLC, molecular modeling and other modern analytical techniques. Active research is conducted in diverse areas of both pure and applied research ranging from the study of novel reaction mechanisms to the analysis of environmental pollutants.

The Counselor Education (CNS) Program at Murray State University is dedicated to providing quality education and training for individuals pursuing a profession in the field of counseling or school psychology. Program options include a Master of Arts in School Counseling and an Education Specialist with emphasis in School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Psychology, as well as related school counseling and school psychology endorsements. These programs are designed for persons with an academic and/or experiential background in the helping professions such as, but not limited to, education, social work, psychology, and communication disorders.

Professional Counseling is a dynamic and invaluable career in today’s world of mental health care and is a necessary and compatible companion to other mental health professions.

Career Outlook – According to the United States Department of Labor,

“Overall employment of counselors is expected to increase by 18 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is faster than the average for all occupations. However, growth is expected to vary by specialty. Employment for educational, vocational, and school counselors is expected to grow by 14 percent... Employment of mental health counselors is expected to grow by 24 percent...”

Information for New Students

PK-12 PRINCIPAL AND CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION PRINCIPAL CERTIFICATE

Our new program, the Regional Partnership for Principal Preparation is a 30-hour, cohort-based program that culminates in a second master’s degree and Level 1 School Principal certification. Admission requirements include:

  1. a master’s degree,
  2. three years of teaching experience,
  3. successful completion of an application and interview during the recruitment period, and
  4. a letter of support and MOA from your school district.

SUPERVISOR OF INSTRUCTION, DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION, AND DIRECTOR OF PUPIL PERSONNEL

Our central office endorsements are built upon the school principal endorsement. Admission to these endorsement programs requires that you have either a Masters in School Administration or already hold an endorsement in one administrative area and will simply be adding another. For new students, this means that you will need to start in one of the cohorts and complete the Master’s degree prior to entering into these endorsements. Courses for these endorsements are offered as ‘stand-alone’ and not through a cohort. See the Revised Catalog for specific details.

SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT

The School Superintendent program is largely unchanged, as experience as an administrator has always been required for this endorsement. See the Revised Catalog for more details.

OPTION 6 OF THE ALTERNATIVE ROUTES FOR ADMINISTRATOR CERTIFICATION

Since 2001, Murray State University has offered a means by which school districts can broaden an applicant pool with the inclusion of persons not yet certified. These candidates would then have 2 years to complete all requirements. Effective July 1, 2011 Alternative Certification candidates must be part of a Cohort for initial certification. There are other provisions for the Executive Program and endorsement extension.

Occupational therapy (OT) is a medically-based profession that focuses on promoting independence for clients to increase their successful performance with activities of daily living (ADL). Occupational therapists provide skilled services to individuals of all ages who may experience any combination of physical, developmental, cognitive, emotional, and social difficulties. Graduates of the occupational therapy program will be familiar with the processes and procedures necessary to tailor rehabilitation individually for each client, through evaluation and treatment, and to restore or improve function in occupational performance within the context of the client’s life environments and relationships. Occupational therapy students will develop and implement OT interventions including: restoration of performance abilities; instruction in compensatory techniques; adaptation of tasks, processes or environments; disability prevention techniques; and health promotion strategies.

The Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) degree is offered within the Department of Applied Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Health Professions, Paducah Regional campus. Murray State University offers a unique curriculum designed to introduce students to the profession of occupational therapy through current research, clinical experiences, and interprofessional collaboration with other health care professionals. The MSOT program is a 24-month continuous, year-round curriculum that strengthens students’ critical inquiry, cultural competence, and patient care skills through didactic and clinical education. Level II Fieldwork is completed full-time, the last two semesters of the program. Upon completion of all curriculum requirements with a minimum GPA of 3.0, graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

The entry-level MSOT program has applied for accreditation and has been granted Candidacy Status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814-3449. ACOTE’s telephone number c/o AOTA is 301.652.AOTA. The program must have a preaccreditation review, complete an on-site evaluation, and be granted Accreditation Status before its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, all states require licensure to practice occupational therapy; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Level II Fieldwork must be completed within 24 months following completion of the didactic portion of the program.

**Note: All states regulate occupational therapy practice and a felony conviction may affect a graduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.

The clinical psychology graduate program is accredited by the Master’s in Psychology Accreditation Council and prepares students for certification to practice psychology. The clinical program is based on the philosophy that the master’s degree is first and foremost a degree in psychology, and students should achieve a broad base of knowledge in the field. Thus, students are required to take five psychological foundation courses which prepare the graduate to enter the field of psychology and also provide the general psychology courses required by state licensing boards. The training graduates receive enables them to work in a variety of settings such as community mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, prisons, comprehensive care centers, and schools. Some graduates also choose to teach at two-year academic institutions.

Following core courses in assessment (administration, scoring and interpretation of intelligence and personality tests) and psychotherapy, students complete a supervised two-semester, 20-hour per week clinical practicum. Clinical psychology students serve their practica at the MSU Psychological Center, an on-campus treatment center that provides therapy and assessments for children, adults, and families from the community as well as for university students and staff. In addition, students receive 2.5 hours per week of supervision with our Ph.D. licensed clinical psychologists. This allows for a fine-tuning of clinical skills as well as an added assurance that the clinician is providing the best and most ethical services to the center’s clients.

The primary objective of the program in General Psychology is to provide a period of graduate study during which students gain knowledge and skills necessary to seek career opportunities in governmental or community agencies, teach in two-year colleges, or pursue doctoral-level study in psychology or related fields. To meet this objective, a curriculum has been developed which will provide exposure to the breadth of psychology and intensive study of those areas that are currently of greatest concern in the field. In addition, training in statistics and research design, and participation in research are provided to strengthen the student's command of the tools of the profession.

Note: the master's program in General Psychology does not train students in the practice of psychology. Thus, graduates with this degree cannot conduct any form of counseling, psychotherapy, psychological testing, or psychological evaluations. The master's program in Clinical Psychology trains students in the practice of psychology.

The master's degree is a two-year program, with thesis and non-thesis tracks. The program includes graduate course work and multiple clinical practicum experiences each semester. These experiences include the MSU Speech and Hearing Clinic, three preschool programs, area schools, hospitals, and various medical settings. The program is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Speech-language pathology is an education/health-related profession whose practitioners work in schools, hospitals, skilled care facilities, rehabilitation centers and clinics. Graduates are eligible for the Clinical Certificate of Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, as well as professional licensure in most states in the U.S. Professionals work with various developmental child speech and language disorders, voice, stuttering and neurogenic disorders with adults, oral communication disorders resulting from oral, facial, or laryngeal pathologies and traumas, or aural habilitation with hearing impaired populations. Employment opportunities are widely available, with critical shortages in some parts of the country.

The Sustainability Science M.S. program is an interdisciplinary exploration of sustainability issues related to science, appealing to students with interests in the environment, advanced technology, and sustainable development. Integrating knowledge and experiences from each Jones College of Science, Engineering, and Technology department as well as the Hutson School of Agriculture and the College of Education; the Sustainability Science M.S. is designed to provide students with a Master's level of understanding of topics including ecological health, advanced energy technology, and other scientific applications of sustainability. The program is designed to encourage the implementation of sustainable practices in response to local, regional, national, and global issues. The course of study allows specialization in one of four tracks: Agricultural Sustainability, Environmental Sustainability, Industrial and Technical Sustainability, and Sustainability Education. All students must complete a core curriculum, two restricted electives, advanced courses in their area of interest, and a capstone two-semester practicum in which students design and implement a project in collaboration with a faculty mentor that applies their knowledge of sustainability. You can find the curriculum here.

After completion of this program of study, students will have a graduate-level understanding of sustainability science, including topics such as ecological health, advanced energy technology, and other scientific applications of sustainability. Students will be able to apply such knowledge to create solutions to current environmental problems, and have the potential to lead the world to a more sustainable future.

The youth and nonprofit field is growing rapidly with the number of nonprofits now over 2,000,000. This indicates a 30% growth in the last decade alone. With this growth, and in order to meet the demands of those interested in community service and non-profit work, it is imperative that leaders in the field have an avenue for additional preparation. Leaders in the youth and nonprofit field often have degrees representing a broad spectrum of disciplines, including but not limited to psychology, sociology, business, recreation, organizational communication and others. Too few have degrees that are focused on the specific competencies necessary for success in the youth and human service field. This certificate focuses on these competencies and will strengthen leadership skills and programs addressing many community needs in the region. This certificate can be completed 100% online.
