Murray State University acknowledges that some students prefer to use first names other than their legal name to identify themselves. Beginning with the spring semester, any student may choose a preferred first name to appear on Canvas, course rosters viewable by faculty, and on the People Finder directory.

Students interested in requesting a preferred first name should complete the Preferred First Name Change Request posted at: http://www.murraystate.edu/registrar_files/Preferred%20First%20Name%20Change%20Request.pdf and bring the completed form to the Office of the Registrar, 113 Sparks Hall, along with a photo ID. Students unable to present the form in person may mail the completed and notarized form to the Registrar’s Office. Inappropriate use of the preferred name, including but not limited to misrepresentation or attempting to avoid a legal obligation, may be cause for denying the request.

It is important to note that the preferred first name will not appear on any legal documents such as paychecks and transcripts.
