Take Back the Night: The History
Take Back the Night rallies
and marches began in Germany in 1973 as a protest against the fear that
women encountered walking the streets at night. It was designed to give
women a way to speak out against violence. The first U.S. rally was in
San Francisco in 1978. MSU organized its first rally in 1993 and has continued the tradition each year.
