Myth or Reality?
Myth! The average amount of weight gain is 4 pounds. Why? It could be natural changes in your body as you continue to age and mature. Changes in eating habits and adjusting to eating in the dining halls may also contribute. Plus, it's not uncommon for people to put on weight when they're nervous about a new situation.
Stay calm! Focus on enjoying new experiences, identifying your feelings, and sharing thoughts with your friends. As you adjust to your new environment, so will your body!
Discover resources. Talk to your RA or friends about your concerns. Talk to a nutritionist to design a healthy meal plan for you. Find a fun activity, take a PE class, or join an intramural team.
Don't diet! Lots of rese4arch shpws that not only do diets not work, but they create problems.
Have fun. The best way to decrease anxiety is to enjoy yourself, friends, and your activities.
Doses of Reality
- Diets don't make you beautiful. Very few people will ever look like models. Glamour is a look, not a size. You don't have to be thin to be attractive.
- 8 million people in the United States suffer from eating disorders.
- If shop mannequins were real women, they'd be too thin to menstuate.
- The models in magazines are often airbrushed and edited with Adobe Photoshop. They are not perfect.
