David and Ashley Dill Distinguished Professorship in Accounting - A generous gift of $1 million from David and Ashley Dill, both graduates of Murray State University, has funded the Department of Accounting’s first and only Distinguished Professor of Accounting. The department has also received $250,000 of state matching funds. The faculty initiated a search for a distinguished teacher and scholar to fill the position. The Department of Accounting selected Dr. L. Murphy Smith as the David and Ashley Dill Distinguished Professor of Accounting. Dr. Murphy comes to MSU from Texas A & M University and is a nationally recognized researcher who provides the department with additional teaching expertise in international accounting and ethics.
During his second academic year, 2012-13, as the David and Ashley Dill Distinguished Professor of Accounting, Dr. L. Murphy Smith taught courses on financial accounting and international accounting. During the year, he added to his research accomplishments: 2 research awards, 8 journal articles published or forthcoming, 2 research grants, and 9 academic conference presentations.
Dr. Smith finished work on two coauthored textbooks, one on international accounting and one regarding global business. Dr. Smith serves on 5 journal editorial boards. Starting in 2012, he became the editor of Journal of Legal, Ethical and Regulatory Issues. As a result of his reputation as an ethics expert, he gave an invited CPE presentation on ethics, titled ‘Ethics: Why it’s the Heart of the Accounting Profession,’ to the Kentucky Society of CPAs in Louisville, Kentucky. He also gave a research presentation at Murray State’s International Education Week, titled: Ethics in International Business.
Regarding service, Dr. Smith served on two university committees (Provost Search Committee and Research Policy Committee) and two college committees. He chaired an Honors Thesis Committee. He held three leadership positions in the American Accounting Association.
