Concise list of University Studies SLOs per Learning Goal:

  1. Develop students' (oral and written) communication skills:
    Students will
    • 1.1  listen and speak competently in a variety of contexts, which may include public, interpersonal, and/or small group settings;
    • 1.2  identify, analyze, and evaluate statements, assumptions, and conclusions representing diverse points of view;
    • 1.3  construct informed, sustained, and ethical arguments in response;
    • 1.4  plan, organize, revise, practice, edit and proofread to improve the development and clarity of ideas;
    • 1.5  write clear and effective prose in several forms, using conventions appropriate to audience (including academic audiences), purpose, and genre; and
    • 1.6  find, analyze, evaluate, and cite pertinent primary and secondary sources, including academic databases, to prepare speeches and written texts.
  2. Encourage students to think critically while gathering, analyzing, and evaluating information to reach logical conclusions:
    Students will demonstrate an ability to
    • 2.1 think critically and apply critical thinking in various disciplines and
    • 2.2 gather, analyze, and evaluate information and apply that information in decision-making (a process also known as information literacy).
  3. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the roles and applications of science and technology toward resolving problems in an ever-changing world:
    Students will demonstrate
    • 3.1 an understanding of the methods of scientific or mathematical inquiry,
    • 3.2 basic concepts and principles in mathematics or one or more of the natural sciences,
    • 3.3 application of the principles of science and mathematics to interpret and make predictions in one or more of the mathematics and the natural sciences, and
    • 3. 4 mathematical and/or scientific principles as they relate to issues of personal and/or public importance.
  4. Gain a critical understanding of the world's historical, literary, philosophical, and artistic traditions:
    Students will
    • 4.1 utilize basic formal elements, techniques, concepts, and/or vocabulary of specific disciplines within the Arts and Humanities in scholarly/academic work;
    • 4.2 distinguish between various kinds of evidence by identifying reliable sources and valid arguments;
    • 4.3 demonstrate how social, cultural, and historical contexts influence cognitive and creative expression in the arts and humanities;
    • 4.4 evaluate the significance of human expression and experience in shaping large social, cultural, and historical events; and
    • 4.5 recognize enduring and contemporary issues of human experience.
  5. Understand the dynamics of social responsibility:
    Students will demonstrate
    • 5.1 written, oral, or project-oriented proficiency for discussing what civic responsibility and citizenship is;
    • 5.2 written, oral, or project-oriented proficiency regarding social issues for children, adolescents, and/or adults; and
    • 5.3 written, oral, or project-oriented proficiency for discussing the many facets of cultural diversity and its implication for responsible citizenship.
  6. Understand the dynamics of competing economic and political systems.
    Students will
    • 6.1 demonstrate knowledge of at least one area of the social and behavioral sciences;
    • 6.2 apply knowledge, theories, and research methods, including ethical conduct to analyze problems pertinent to at least one area of the social behavioral sciences;
    • 6.3 understand and demonstrate how at least one area of the social and behavioral sciences conceptualize diversity and the ways it shapes human experience; and
    • 6.4 integrate knowledge of at least one area of the social and behavioral sciences into issues of personal or public importance.
  7. Understand the dynamics of cultural diversity
    Students will
    • 7.1 demonstrate knowledge of the culture of at least one area other than their own;
    • 7.2 explain aspects of the contexts (e.g. historical, social, ethnic, economic, geographic) in which people of different cultures live;
    • 7.3 demonstrate an awareness of how different contexts and/or world views produce different perspectives on current issues and events;
    • 7.4 recognize the influence of individual differences (such as gender, ethnicity, geography) and past experiences on their interpretation of texts, artworks, or experiences; and
    • 7.5 analyze one or more specific cultural topics, problems, artistic forms, value systems, philosophical contexts, or religious ideas in relation to the larger human context in which they become meaningful
  8. Understand the Dynamics of Complex Moral and Ethical Issues:
    Students will
    • 8.1 analyze ethical dilemmas confronted by individuals and diverse communities and the foundations upon which resolution might be possible;
    • 8.2 compare and contrast their own value system to those of others;
    • 8.3 give examples of the historical development of value systems and the impact of ideology upon ethics;
    • 8.4 describe the values behind their opinions, decisions, and actions; and
    • 8.5 follow commonly accepted ethical standards in their academic work and in their behavior toward others.
  9. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the roles and applications of technology toward resolving problems in an every changing world.
    Students will:
    • 9.1 develop the ability to use technology appropriate to the field of study.
    • 9.2 demonstrate an understanding of how technology can be used to solve everyday problems within society.
    • 9.3  demonstrate an ability to use technology-related terms correctly.
