Adult and professional learners are often place-bound by family, career, or military commitments. As a result, their access to higher learning and professional development is hindered, especially for those students residing in or near communities without institutions of higher education. Access to general higher education programs, primarily through distance education, continues to increase for these adult learners; however, distance-based access to agriculture programs has not kept pace. These adult and professional learners are often excluded from pursuing a master’s degree in agriculture; substantially limiting their ability to train or retrain for new and emerging employment opportunities in food and agricultural fields. Inclusion of these students can be facilitated through the development of a distance-based Master’s degree program in agriculture, thereby expanding the number and quality of graduate students enrolling in Murray State University’s Hutson School of Agriculture (HSOA).
