The Department of Theatre will provide: excellence in theatre instruction through classroom and production events; an outlet for our regional community to experience excellent theatre productions and theatrical support; and innovative approaches to promote life-long, creative ventures for our students after graduation.

The department utilizes two performance spaces: Robert E. Johnson Theatre (344 seats) and Actor’s Studio Theatre (55 seats). The department utilizes “smart” classrooms, dance/acting studio classrooms, and other facilities on the MSU campus for instruction.

Students are educated as liberal arts theatre practitioners in preparation for employment or graduate study in fields requiring strong oral and written communication skills, teamwork, and a goal-oriented approach to work.

For the student body at large, the program affords the opportunity to experience, as audience or participants, a wide range of dramatic forms selected both to educate and to entertain.

Each theatre major is required to work in or on 12 faculty-directed productions prior to graduation. Enrollment in THD 106 as required by the major and/or minor evaluate this production requirement.

At least one study abroad experience is highly encouraged for all theatre majors and minors. The department faculty participates in study abroad courses to facilitate this activity.

Students may participate in two organizations in the department: Alpha Psi Omega (national honorary dramatic society) and Sock and Buskin (theatre student organization).

The department is accredited by the  National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and has alumni working all over the globe.  Scholarships are awarded to select students who excel in the theatre.

Chrishell Stause      "I chose Murray State because it offers a good education for a good price. I really love the atmosphere and the friendly people.  The theatre department has many opportunities and the staff is always willing to help."

Chrishell Stause, Alumnus

"It all started at MSU on the Robert E. Johnson stage in the fall of 1983 when the curtain fell on our production of 'That Championship Season'. I had the distinct thought, 'I have to do this for the rest of my life.' It was then and there the seed was planted."

Jilon VanOver      "People always asked me why I came to Murray, Kentucky from Southern California. It's because, when I visited the campus, I suddenly felt at home. Murray State is where I discovered who I was, and with the support of a great community, started me on the path of who I wanted to be."
