NOTICE - November 22, 2014

Murray State Community:

I am writing to inform you of a serious situation we have dealt with over the past 24 hours.

We were informed that an individual, who was in custody at the Calloway County Jail following his arrest on an unrelated charge, made violent threats against authorities.

He was then transferred and admitted to Western State Hospital for a psychological evaluation. During this process he made additional and specific threats against Murray State and these threats were deemed credible by hospital personnel.

Once we were made aware of these threats we worked with law enforcement officials to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff and other campus visitors. In addition, we worked directly with law enforcement at all levels (local, county, state and federal) and we were able to obtain felony charges against this individual based on the additional threats.

He remains in custody and will remain in custody and stand trial for these felonies in multiple jurisdictions.

I want to be clear, that while we actively worked this situation, since he was always in custody, there was no time or opportunity he would have been able to carry out his threats against Murray State.

This situation, and others across the country, reinforces the need for us to be diligent in our efforts of being prepared and aware of circumstances that may lead to tragic events.

I want to thank the efforts of Interim-Chief Dunaway, members of the Murray State Police Department, and the other law enforcement officers, who worked together and cooperated across lines by sharing information to ensure the safety of all members within our community at all times.

Very Respectfully,

Bob Davies
