Racer 101

What is Racer 101?
Racer 101 is an extended orientation allowing students to get an idea of college life before they actually move in and start classes in the fall. Racer 101 is different from Summer Orientation, where students register for classes. This is a four-day week of activities where incoming freshmen learn the layout of campus, interact with older students, are taught MSU traditions, and participate in team building exercises.

Why should I attend Racer 101?

If you are a natural born leader (or even a self taught leader), Racer 101 is the place for you! This is an opportunity for students who want to be involved on campus to meet new people and make new friends. It also gives us an opportunity to get to know our incoming freshmen, who will eventually be the spokespersons for the university. It gives us a chance to get to view your leadership skills. You may be one of our future Student Ambassadors or Summer O Counselors.

Do I have to attend Racer 101?

No, it is not required that you attend Racer 101. However, if you are looking for a way to get involved on campus, this program is designed for you. It is a way to jumpstart your involvement on campus. Studies show that students who get involved outside of the classroom actually do better scholastically, have the support of their fellow students, and are exposed to encouraging faculty and staff members. These students are more likely to finish their degrees than students who do not get involved.

How do I register?

Space is limited - You can register one of two ways. You can submit the on-line registration form. Once you submit the form, we will hold your registration until we receive your payment. You can also fill out the form, print it, and mail it in with your payment to MSU Office of Recruitment, Racer 101, 102 Curris Center, Murray KY 42071.

How much does it cost?

Racer 101- BLUE is June 7th-10th and Racer 101- GOLD is July 8th-11th. The $140 fee covers the three night accommodations on campus and all meals starting at dinner on Day 1 through breakfast before checking out on Day 4. It also covers the cost of programming and scheduled events, as well as a Racer 101 t-shirt.

Costs for Racer 101 are partially refundable, however, a request must be made in writing 4 full weeks before the date of the selected Racer 101. There will be a $40 processing fee.

When do I check-in?

Depending on which Racer 101 session you have decided to attend, check-in is at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7th (Racer 101- BLUE) and 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8th (Racer 101- GOLD). Please note that we are in the Central Standard Time zone (CST) and you may need to adjust your clocks accordingly.

Be sure to bring your Camper Consent and Release Form (.pdf) with you to check-in, filled out by a parent.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will be staying in one of our residential colleges; you will need to bring a blanket and a pillow, linens(sheets, towels, washcloths), you may also need an alarm clock, and will need to bring personal supplies (soap, shampoo, etc). You will be outside for the majority of the time, so be sure to bring cool, comfortable clothing and good walking shoes. See a more detailed packing list.

Will I need to bring Money?

It is not necessary to bring money with you. However, you will have an opportunity to visit our University Bookstore or you may choose to visit our Thoroughbrewed Café, which is one of our two coffee shops on campus which proudly brews Starbucks® coffee. Therefore, you may choose to bring a little spending money, but that is entirely up to you.
