Furniture Design / Wood

Furniture Design students apply principles of art and craft to produce useful art objects.  While a variety of materials may be employed, the main emphasis of the area is woodworking.  As part of intensive “hands on” instruction, students learn to use a number of hand and power tools.

Projects typically start with simple containers, then progress to complex furniture construction requiring carving, shaping, joinery, lamination and finishing techniques.  Problem solving and creativity are of dual concern making wood a unique blend of technical skill and aesthetic expression. Facilities Furniture Design has 4,250 square feet of studio space open 24 hours a day.  Individual studio spaces for students with an emphasis in the discipline are also available.
